Where the wind rules out fabric
On the steep plots above the bay the wind decides what survives. We are regularly called to replace shade sails and canvas that has been torn out of its fixings, sometimes twice on the same balcony.
Where it blows that hard the answer is a solid cover rather than blades or fabric: an aluminium roof anchored into the structure, a clean ceiling plane underneath, the gutter built into the frame and the downlights recessed so there is nothing for a gust to get behind. It does not need to be retracted, because there is nothing to retract.

Can an awning actually survive Gordon's Bay wind?
A properly engineered one can. We anchor louvre structures into the building and brace them for the gusts, and closed louvres present far less to the wind than a fabric awning, which is why fabric-only covers tend to fail here.
What about the view: will a solid roof block it?
No. Adjustable louvre blades open flat so the terrace stays open to the False Bay view, and only close down when you want shade or when the wind gets up.
